How to Fertilize Grass Sprouts

Fertilization of young grass sprouts is important to keep the lawn healthy. Proper fertilization reduces the chances that weeds will invade your lawn and take it over. Well-fed and watered lawns have less disease and fewer problems from pests and weeds. A well-maintained lawn that is healthy and thriving requires little to no pesticide use and is healthier for the environment overall.

  Perform the soil test according to the instructions and send it to either the extension service or directly to the lab that performs the test.

  Feed your grass sprouts in the summer for warm season grasses or the fall for cool season grasses, according to the results of the test. The test results will help you determine which nutrients your soil needs, such as phosphorus and potassium, or lime if your soil is acidic.

  Choose a fertilizer that meets the recommendations for your soil. If you are not performing a soil test, use an all-purpose 10-10-10 nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK) fertilizer at 1 lb. of nitrogen per 1000 square feet, according to the instructions on the package.
