Common Bermuda Sod Information

Common Bermuda sod (C. dactylon) is a coarse turf grass used to cover sports fields, parks and golf courses. The sod is found in humid areas of the United States, such as the desert Southwest and southeastern regions.
  1. Installation

    • Common Bermuda sod, also known as Bermuda grass, is laid starting at the property line in a tight, bricklike pattern to prevent open seams. Installation is done in well-drained, moist soil.

    Watering

    • After installation, the sod is watered three times a day for two weeks and then once a week until the first fall frost.

    Fertilizing

    • Water-soluble or slow-release fertilizer is applied once a month to control weeds during the spring and summer months.

    Mowing

    • Common Bermuda sod is mowed when it reaches a height of 1 inch. A reel mower is recommended to obtain a clean cut through the tough, dense sod.

    Pests and Diseases

    • Common Bermuda sod is susceptible to damage by sod webworms, Bermuda grass mites, and dollar spot and brown patch fungal diseases. Chemical insecticides and fungicides are utilized as treatments.
