How to Use a Sod Remover

Sod removers, or sod cutters, come in two types: hand-held manual removers and machine cutters or removers. The purpose of a sod remover is to cut strips of healthy grass for use as sod on another property. Sod removers are not difficult to operate once you understand the nuances of the machine. This takes a little practice and some patience. Once you get the hang of it, using a sod remover is easy.

Put on gloves, eye protection and a dust mask. Check the gas and oil to ensure the machine is running on good gas and oil. Check the air filter as well. Clogged or over-used air filters can cause the engine to run poorly.

Position the sod remover in front of the grass where you want to begin your cuts. Set the angle of the sod cutter according to the manufacturer's instructions for your particular grade. Uneven grades require about a 35-degree pitch or angle.

    • 3

Set the remover's blade length. This will be particular to how deep you wish to cut into the grass. For shallow cuts, set the blade length between 2 inches and 3 inches. For deep cuts into the grass, set the blade length between 4 inches and 5 inches.

Place the gear to the "Neutral" or "N" position and then start the sod remover. Put the sod remover into gear or in the "Cut" position. Walk behind the sod remover in a straight line until you reach the point where you wish to stop. Push down on the blade cutter, which cuts the grass perpendicular to the machine.

Have someone walk behind you as you cut the sod, rolling it up as you go. This will clearly define where you've made cuts and will also keep freed sod from becoming a tripping hazard.
