How to Measure the Length of a Lawn

The length of your lawn is generally thought of as the line that runs from your property line from left to right in front of your home. Starting at the left edge of your property, you would need to measure all the way to the next property line on the right side of your house. Together with the width of your lawn, which extends away from your home to the street, for example, you can determine the area of your lawn by multiplying these two numbers. The same techniques can be used to measure the width of your lawn.

Find out exactly where your property begins and ends. You can obtain this information from the property records department of your local government office. These records can generally be obtained for a small fee.

    • 2

Place markers, such as small flags, at either end of your property. Make sure the flags are directly across from each other.

    • 3

Ask someone to hold a measuring tape at one end near the first flag. Move the measuring tape along your lawn to the opposite flag to get the measurement in feet and inches.

    • 4

Use a measuring wheel if your property is too large to use a measuring tape. Reset the measuring wheel to zero by pressing the reset button. Put the indicator on the wheel on the edge of your property near the first flag and start walking. Walk slowly and keep a straight line until you reach the opposite flag. The meter on the measuring wheel gives you the length of your lawn in feet or meters, depending on the model.
