Remove all rocks, deadwood and other solid materials from the soil.
Aerate the soil to a depth of 4 inches with a gas-powered lawn tiller.
Prepare the soil with sand, compost and lime or peat moss. An inch of sand and compost will supply needed nutrients. Lime and peat moss will help raise or lower the acidity of the soil, depending on your needs. Properly prepare the soil with these materials before spreading the seed.
Fill the spreader with a bag of Scotts grass seed. Set the distributor on the spreader as indicated on the Scotts grass seed package. Be sure you have selected a grass seed suitable for the climate.
Walk the spreader across the lawn in long, adjacent passes until the soil has been covered with the seed.
Flip a plastic gardening rake over and run its backside over the soil gently to slightly bury the seeds. Be careful not to redistribute the seeds.
