How to Add Soil to Your Lawn

Put the directed amount of soil and water and dye into the chamber of the plastic pH test kit and shake it well. Allow the soil to settle, then compare the color of the water to the color-coded chart included with your kit to determine the pH level of the soil.

Spread garden soil in a 1-inch thickness across the lawn.

Fill a garden spreader with lime and spread it over the lawn if your soil tested below a reading of 6.0. A low reading indicates acidic soil, which can be raised by the addition of lime.

Fill a wheelbarrow with peat moss and spread it at a depth of 1 inch if your soil tested above a 7.5 reading. Readings above 7.5 indicate soil that is alkaline. Peat moss is the perfect remedy for this problem.

Pour grass fertilizer into the spreader, then check the fertilizer packaging for the appropriate distribution rate. Spread the fertilizer, then rake the soil with a metal rake to incorporate the lime or moss, fertilizer and garden soil.
