Unique Fencing Options

There are a wide variety of materials you can use for fencing outside the traditional wood fencing. Alternative materials can fulfill your needs for sustainability, environmental awareness and overall appearance, while still providing security and privacy. The costs of these alternative options vary greater from each other and in comparison to a traditional wood fence.
  1. Raspberry or Blackberry bushes

    • People often grow hedges around their property to create a natural fence. However, hedges provide no real security and will not effectively keep animals in or out of your yard. Alternatively, raspberry or blackberry bushes can be grown in rows to create a property barrier. They grow quickly, so it will not take long to have a thick natural fence. They also have thorns, so they can more effectively keep your pet in the yard, or keep stray and wild animals out of your yard. Additionally, they are attractive to look at and provide fresh berries to eat.

    Bamboo fencing

    • Bamboo fencing panels can be purchased and installed similarly to wood fencing panels. However, unlike wood, bamboo does not need to be treated. It is naturally more durable and it is sustainable. Bamboo is also attractive, and it will not fall apart over time if not cared for.

    Cement block fence

    • Cement block fences provide both security and privacy. They can be painted or left their natural gray. They require little to no ongoing maintenance, and they will last a long time. Although the initial cost of cement block is more than wood, it will last far longer than a wood fence, and it will not need to be cleaned and treated annually like wood.

If you do not want a solid fence, you can choose to alternate cement block sections with split rail sections. At the end of each cement block section, you can add cement blocks standing on end, and the split rail wood and fit into the openings of the cement block.

    Modular Trellis Screens

    • Modular trellis screens typically come in two- or three-panel sections, and they are used for small areas or as decoration. However, you can purchase multiple modular trellis screens and attach them together end to end. This will enable you to use them for fencing in a larger area. To secure the modular trellis screens, you can install thin fence posts as you would for a normal fence, and then attach the screens to the fence posts.
