How to Raise a Soil Mix's pH With Lime

Soil composition is one of the most critical aspects of fostering a healthy garden. If the pH level of the soil is too acidic, plant growth will be sparse and spotty. Fortunately for those unfamiliar with garden care, raising the soil pH is a rather straightforward process. Lime added to the soil will raise the pH and make the soil suitable for growth.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn over the soil in the garden with a tiller. Set the tiller to a depth of 3 to 4 inches.

    • 2

Fill the spreader with a bag of crushed lime powder. Take note of the distribution level as indicated on the packaging, and set your spreader accordingly.

    • 3

Position the spreader in a corner of your garden, and walk it straight across to the opposite corner. Once you reach the end, turn around and make an adjacent pass to your first. Continue back and forth across the garden until the lime has been evenly spread.

    • 4

Gently rake the lime into the soil, being careful not to distribute the lime unevenly.
