How to Build a Shallow Bird Pond

If you're a birdwatcher or just want to create a backyard feature for the neighborhood birds, you can build a shallow bird pond. This gives small birds and animals a place to bathe and swim, as well as adds a nice feature to your backyard. Building the pond doesn't take much time, and in just a few hours, you'll have a treat for your birds and an eye-catching decoration.

  • Shovel
  • Rubber liner
  • Utility knife
  • Hose

      Pick a location for your pond. Dig a shallow hole, as deep as you prefer, using the shovel.

      Lay out the rubber liner in the hole, making sure it extends over the sides of the pond at least 1 foot. Cut off any excess liner with the utility knife, then put dirt over the edge of the rubber liner to hold it in place.

      Fill the pond with water from the hose and decorate with rocks and trim to your preference.
