How to Tear Up Turf

Whether you want to create a small garden in the middle of your lawn or just remove the grass to replace it with something new, you'll need to use a few tools to tear up the turf. This process isn't incredibly complicated, because you're just cutting off the turf at the roots. But it can be backbreaking work, particularly if you have a large amount of turf to remove. Removing a small section of grass can be done with some simple yard tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the edger to cut straight down into the grass and mark out a 1-foot-wide strip in the turf, and make it a few feet long.

    • 2

Insert the tip of the spade into the line from the edger, then tilt it back at a sharp angle, close to parallel to the ground. Push the spade toward the center of the 1-foot-wide strip, and work your way around the entire strip until the turf is loose from the ground.

    • 3

Roll the strip up tightly with your hands, rolling it like a piece of pastry or a newspaper. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for any remaining areas of turf that need removal.
