How to Cut Your Lawn Like the Baseball Stadium

Treat your lawn as a blank canvas to create designs in your grass just as they do in baseball stadiums. Mowing a lawn in different directions creates the illusion of different colored stripes. The bends in the grass reflect the sun or create shadows, creating the lines needed for the designs. Begin with basic designs, such as checkerboards, plaids and diamonds, graduating to more complex designs such as the American flag or a labyrinth.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the outline of your yard on graph paper. Sketch the desired pattern for the lawn. Visualize the pattern from the street while looking toward your house. Take the lawn mover's width into consideration when designing the pattern.

    • 2

Mark the directions of your mowing stripes on graph paper. Construct the design where you start and finish the design mowing in the same direction.

    • 3

Make a straight edge on the lawn by placing a stake at each end of the longest part of the yard. Tie a string to one stake, stretch it across the yard and tie it off to the second stake.

    • 4

Set the string parallel to the street, driveway or walking path, choosing the location based upon the first stripe on the design. Place the string about 3 to 4 inches off the ground to ensure the line isn't cut by the mower. Leave enough room between the edge of the lawn and the string so that one pass can be made on one side of the string and a second pass on the opposite side.

    • 5

Make the first pass across the lawn following the straight edge, mowing until you reach the end of the pass. Disengage the mower blades or tilt the mower up on the back wheels to lift the mower blade off the lawn.

    • 6

Back up slightly and make a wide turn to face the opposite direction, lining up the next mowing pass with the previous pass. Re-engage the blade and make a second pass. Finish cutting the pattern in your lawn.

    • 7

Roll the grass with a weighted grass roller equal to the width of the lawn mower. Roll the stripe in the same direction as you mowed. This enhances the design in your lawn.
