Outdoor Rustic Wooden Fencing Ideas

Rustic fencing gives your lawn and garden a comfortable and down-home feel. Mass produced fencing has a bland look that you'll find on thousands of other homes. Rustic fencing has a more individualized look and fits almost any house style or design. The designs use elements like brick and wood. Use rustic fence ideas for a weekend do-it-yourself project around your outdoor spaces.
  1. Wood Picket Fence

    • Picket fences have an old-fashioned look and, with a little effort, you can make that fence look more rustic. Fences of this type use thin wood pieces with a pointed top to create a fenced-in space. Before installing the fence, give it a distressed look. Paint the fence pieces in a pale green, light blue or bright red color, and let the paint dry overnight. Rub beeswax against the wood, and give the fence pieces a coat of white paint. Use a second coat of white paint and, after it dries, rub the pieces with steel wool. The wool pulls off the beeswax and removes any paint stuck to the wax, letting patches of the first coat shine through.

    Wood Planks

    • Use wood planks and old logs, such as those designed for flowerbeds. Typically, the wood pieces sit flat on the ground, separating the flowerbed from the surrounding yard. Use the same idea to make a rustic wood fence, but stack the pieces together. Stack the wood as if you were using bricks or stone, building the fence as high as you need. You may need to use a small amount of mortar or cement to hold the wood pieces together.

    Wood and Wire

    • Create the basic frame of your fence with traditional wood fence posts. Space the posts around your yard, leaving empty spaces in between the wood. For an even more rustic look, use old railroad ties as the fence posts. Connect the fence together with barbed wire or a thin metal wire. Wrap the wire around each fence post, carry it to the next post and wrap it again. Repeat the process, using more wire higher up on the fence posts.

    Rustic Wood Fence

    • Create a fence from branches and twigs found in your own yard. Use larger branches as anchors, and evenly space those around the yard. Use smaller twigs to connect the anchors, placing the twigs between the anchors at different heights. Secure the twigs to the branches with twine or lightweight metal wire. Look for twigs that are still green on the inside as those are more lightweight and flexible.
