Protect yourself with a pair of comfortable work boots, long pants and safety glasses since the rototiller can throw small rocks and pebbles back toward the operator.
Set the depth dial on the side of the rototiller to the desired depth. A typical yard will benefit from a tilling depth of 6 to 8 inches; if your new plants root deeply, consider tilling down 10 to 12 inches.
Walk the rototiller to one corner of the yard and start up the engine.
Grasp the two handlebars and walk forward in an even pass to the opposite side of the yard.
Pivot the rototiller and make a slightly overlapping pass adjacent to the first.
Continue back and forth over the grass until you have covered the area, and then make one final pass around the perimeter of the lawn. If the soil seems too chunky, till the area a second time, making your passes perpendicular to the first round.
