How to Burn Out a Pine Stump

After a pine tree is cut down, you are left to deal with a tree stump. If the stump is located in a high-traffic area, it could pose a safety risk. You can remove the stump by burning it, but frequently it can be difficult to keep the fire burning long enough to burn out the stump. If the stump is properly prepared in advance, you will have an increased chance of eliminating the stump.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill several holes into the pine tree stump. For an average-sized stump, drill six holes.

    • 2

Pour 1/2 gallon of kerosene on top the tree stump and into the holes. Cover the stump with a plastic tarp to keep it dry. Allow it to soak for two weeks.

    • 3

Dig a trench around the stump 2 inches deep and at least 6 inches wide. The trench should be at least 3 inches from the stump. This will keep the fire from spreading.

    • 4

Cover the stump with a single layer of charcoal.

    • 5

Pour 2 cups of kerosene onto the charcoal, and cover it with a piece of newspaper.

    • 6

Light the newspaper. The charcoal should catch fire, causing the stump to burn. After an hour or two, the fire will diminish to embers. Allow the stump to completely burn out.
