Lawn Edging Bordering Materials

Lawn edging will keep grass from invading your gardens while at the same time providing an appealing, aesthetic look. They also reduce the need for time-consuming edging and weed-eating. Once installed, they need little to no maintenance, and if a semi-permanent material is used, such as bricks metal, they will last for a long time.
  1. Materials

    • Metal strips are typically the easiest to install, as they require only a small ditch around the area. Plastic borders will often crack over the courses of a few years due to exposure to the elements. Bricks and stone won't suffer due to exposure to the elements.

    Considerations

    • When selecting the material you wish to use for your bordering project, consider cost, aesthetics and permanence. The larger and more visually appealing materials tend to cost more but also tend to last longer. If you expect to be making any major changes to your lawn and garden in the near future or will be moving, a plastic border is a better solution to save money and allow for easy removal.

    Installation

    • When installing your border material, you will need to dig a trench around the garden or other area you wish to border that is the appropriate width for the border. You will need to ensure that the edging border is securely in place and level before replacing the dirt around it. It can be beneficial to place a thin plastic layer under your edging border to prevent weeds and other plants from growing through it.
