# How to Spread Out Awful Grass Clipping Clumps
Clumps of grass clippings can serve beneficial purposes in the yard. You can spread them out over the grass as a fertilizer, or you can use the clumps as mulch in the garden. If you let the grass get over 3 inches in height between mowings, or if you mow the grass when it is wet, you may end up with messy clumps instead of easy to handle dry clippings.

Break the clumps up with your foot or hands so they are open. Leave the clumps to dry for 8 hours. Once dry, they are easier to spread.

Rake the dry clumps into a pile with a regular garden rake. If you are going to use them as mulch, rake the pile close to the garden.

Pick up a pile of clippings using both hands and walk the yard, dropping them in a thin, even layer over the grass. If you are using them as mulch, spread the clippings by hand around the base of your garden plants in a layer no more than 1 inch thick.
