How to Install MTD Mower Belts

The invention of the self-propelled mower made it easier for those who had trouble pushing a mower around their yard. MTD manufactures several self-propelled mowers that use a belt system to take power from the engine and transfer it to the belt drive. The belt drive mounts under the black cover located on the front of the mower deck. When the mower fails to move forward because the belt slips on the pulleys, you must replace it. You do not need to take your mower to an MTD repair facility for this task, as it is a straightforward task that just about any homeowner can complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the MTD mower on its side so the air filter faces upward. This will prevent fuel from running out of the carburetor and into the air filter.

    • 2

Locate the bolts that secure the black cover to the deck. The bolts secure from the bottom of the deck. Remove them with a wrench and place the black cover to the side.

    • 3

Loosen the belt tensioning screw located on the transmission by turning it counterclockwise with a screwdriver until you can remove the drive belt from the transmission pulley.

    • 4

Slide the drive belt back through the access hole in the deck, and remove the belt from the driveshaft pulley. If you cannot work the belt around the blade, remove the bolt that holds the blade onto the driveshaft, and pull the blade off the driveshaft.

    • 5

Place the new belt onto the driveshaft pulley, and extend the belt though the hole in the deck until you can reach the transmission pulley. Place the belt onto the transmission pulley.

    • 6

Reattach the mower blade if you removed it during the belt removal process.

    • 7

Tighten the screw on the transmission to tension the belt.

    • 8

Place the cover onto the top of the mower deck, and secure it from the underside of the deck with the original bolts and the wrench.
