Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space where you plan to build the maze using a measuring tape. The site might be in your backyard or in an empty garage.

    • 2

Use the measurements of the space to sketch the maze. Note the path the maze will follow, including a few twists and turns along the way. Don't make the maze too complicated --- especially if you only have a small space in which to work. Remember the pathway must be wide enough for at least one person to fit through at time.

    • 3

Trace the path of the maze on the ground using a piece of tape or spray paint. Refer to your sketch of the maze when constructing this outline.

    • 4

Build the walls of the maze using scrap materials from around your home. Old fence posts or chain link fences can become walls of the maze. Hang an outstretched tarp across the area. You can also use hoses and rope to define the path, whether you lay them flat on the ground or stretch them in the air.

    • 5

Use lumber, fallen tree branches, tires and broken concrete slabs to define the maze even further. Lay them on the ground as a walkway or along the border of the path.

    • 6

Place obscure pieces of junk, such as an old refrigerator or rusted bicycle, at the dead ends of the maze. When participants round a corner and find this junk in the middle of the path, they'll know they've definitely taken a wrong turn.
