How to Make a Slip Knot for Restraints

Tie a slip knot on the end of a restraining rope in order to attach it to a post, metal ring or hook. The slip knot works by toughening itself when the halter rope attached to your horse, cattle or other farm animal is pulled. It involves crossing the end of the the halter rope against itself in a way that creates a knot that slips for tightness. Latch your animal with a slip knot in less than two minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the restraining rope in your left hand, and then wrap it around the hook, post or metal ring. The end of the rope should be on your right side.

    • 2

Make a loop at the end of the restraining rope and pass it over the portion held in your left hand. The knot will resemble a circle with a line running through its center.

    • 3

Slide the end of the rope behind the loop and itself, and then cross the loop in passing. Wrap your right hand below the knot and pull with the left hand. The knot will slip up to the object that you have tied it to, thereby providing a restraint.
