How to Flatten Lawn Sand

Level land is critical when installing a swimming pool, erecting a retaining wall, building a shed or even setting up a bench. One of the easiest routes to achieving a perfectly level area in your lawn is using lawn sand, which can be added to lower lying areas and flattened to create level ground.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the level to determine which areas of your lawn are lower than the rest.

    • 2

Pour several inches of lawn sand in the lower areas.

    • 3

Compact the sand with the hand tamper. Position the tamper over the sand and pound on top of it to compact and flatten the area.

    • 4

Add a few more inches of sand and flatten again with the hand tamper until the ground appears to be level.

    • 5

Check the evenness of the ground with your level. Add more sand and flatten with the hand tamper until you achieve even ground.
