Will Sod Grow on Top of Sand?

Growing a lawn from sod can be a quickly rewarding endeavor. Homeowners and housing developers alike appreciate the ability to instantly create a green lawn from bare ground. A sod turf lawn grows on almost any soil. If you have a sandy lot, you have any excellent substrate for growing sod turf.

  1. Description

    • Sod turf products are created using different species of turf grass. Typical sod might consist of Kentucky bluegrass mixed with fine or tall fescues and perennial ryegrass. Most sod is farmed near its ultimate consumers, so it tends to be made with grass species appropriate for its region. Sod sold to homeowners is usually in an easy-to-handle size such as 2-by-5 feet.

    Soil

    • Because it's a grass product, sod grows in a variety of soil conditions. A well-draining loamy earth can be mixed with sand, clay and organic material. The soil doesn't have to be particularly fertile, but it must drain well, making sand an excellent base for a sod lawn. As sod comes with a loamy base in the root zone, it contributes to the structure of sandy soil.

    Soil Preparation

    • While sod grows well in sandy soils, the ground must be prepared to receive it. The site should be free of vegetation and rocks. If you leave a tuft of weedy grass or a rock on the lawn, a brown spot will appear in the sod above it. The ground should have good tilth, which is a fine, smooth texture free of soil clumps. Tilth ensure even contact with the sod. If desired, mixing in 2 inches of compost 6 inches into the sand will maximize soil fertility and moisture retention, yielding better growth.

    Tips

    • You can usually find sod for sunny or shady lawns. Pay attention to soil pH, which for most species should be 6.0 to 7.0. Soil testing kits are usually available at local agricultural extension offices. Keep the sod watered until the roots firmly attach to the existing soil. Sod lawns are especially useful in creating lawns in the summer, when a new lawn from seed would be vulnerable to sun and heat damage.
