How to Make a Mowing Strip

Mowing strips make mowing the lawn less work and less stressful. Install mowing strips so you can mow right up to obstacles like fences and flower beds. Mowing strips can be made of anything you like as long as it's installed flush with the ground and is hard enough and wide enough to accommodate the width of the mower's wheels.

Things You'll Need

  • Bricks, pavers, railway ties or landscape timbers
  • Shovel
  • Hose

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the material you want your mowing strip to be made of. Choose brick, pavers or railway ties or landscape timbers.

    • 2

Dig a trench in the ground that's the depth of the material you've chosen. You want the material to sit level with the ground.

    • 3

Set your material in place and carefully fill around it. Check often to make sure the top is level with the ground around it.

    • 4

Tamp the dirt around the material and water the area. The water helps the dirt fully settle and cleans the material you've chosen for your mowing strip. Check the mowing strip when it's dry to see if you need to add more fill dirt.
