Just like other living young things, trees need special care to ensure their health and growth. Young trees are especially susceptible to pests, diseases and damage. If the base of a tree gets a wound, like from a Weed Eater hitting it, micro-organisms can invade the open area of the bark. They attack the healthy tissues and make the wound even larger. To prevent this type of damage from happening, you can take some preventative steps.
Measure 3 feet out all the way around the base of the young tree. Make visible, periodic markings in the soil with a shovel. You'll end up with a 6-foot-diameter ring to protect the base of the tree.
Use a shovel to remove the sod and weeds inside the ring. Place the sod and weeds in a wheelbarrow so you can easily haul everything away.
Cover the dug-out ring with mulch. Start a few inches away from the base of the young tree so the mulch doesn't touch the tree and cause decay. Work your way around the tree and out to the perimeter. Spread the mulch around evenly across the soil 3 to 4 inches deep.
