How to Cultivate Centella Asiatica

Centella asiatica, also called Asian pennywort, is a small perennial herb that originated in the wetlands of Asia. Its creeping stems trail along the ground and produce shovel-shaped green leaves overhead. This herb can grow in USDA Zones 7 to 11, which means it overwinters where temperatures stay above 10 degrees. Some countries, such as Vietnam and Indonesia, consider Centella asiatica a useful culinary herb, while others consider it invasive.

Instructions

    • 1

Search out a suitable site for the Centella asiatica. It thrives in full sun and wet sandy soils such as along wetland borders and in soggy lawns.

    • 2

Lay down 2 to 4 inches of organic compost. Mix it 6 to 8 inches into the soil. This plant survives best in disturbed sandy sites with an abundant amount of organic material. Moisten the soil.

    • 3

Plant seeds of Centella asiatica 1/2 inch deep and 12 inches apart. Once grown, the herb will fill in the spaces. Keep the seeds damp until they germinate.

    • 4

Water the Centella asiatica regularly, especially if you planted it in a dry region. It can withstand flooding and actually thrives in it. Dry weather will cause it to disappear, but it will rebound when it receives moisture again.
