Will Blackberries Grow in Tennessee?

Blackberry plants produce a sweet berry that connoisseurs can enjoy straight from the plant or use in pies, fruit dishes, creams and even wines. Gardeners in Tennessee have a choice between two types of blackberries.
  1. Growing

    • The University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service notes that blackberries grow well in Tennessee. Blackberries may grow wild or in home gardens. It is recommended to plant them on a north-facing hillside in any soil type except sandy or poorly drained. Blackberries can be planted anytime between November 1 to March 15 in Tennessee.

    Types

    • Both thorned and thornless blackberries grow in Tennessee. Although thorned blackberries will grow without a trellis and produce sweeter berries, the thornless varieties are easier to prune and maintain. Cheyenne, Shawnee and Choctaw thorned blackberries and the Chester, Hull and Navajo thornless varieties are recommended for cultivating in Tennessee.

    Caution

    • Blackberry bushes employ very sharp thorns as a measure of defense. These thorns can tear clothing and produce serious wounds if mishandled. Always wear thick gardening gloves when working with thorned blackberry bushes.
