When Can I Plant Lavender in South Georgia?

Lavender is a shrubby perennial grown for its bright blue blooms and heavy fragrance. Growing lavender in South Georgia's hot, humid climate can be a challenge, but careful attention at planting can guarantee success.
  1. Planting Time

    • Plant lavender and other perennial herbs in spring, no earlier than a week or so after the last frost. In South Georgia, USDA Zones 8 and 9, this will be about March 1 through April 1. You can plant throughout the spring, until hot summer weather arrives--about June 1.

    Culture

    • Ensure success by planting your lavender in deeply dug soil with gravel, sand and well-draining organic matter. Give the plants plenty of room for air circulation. These steps will ensure that your lavender doesn't get root rot or mildew in the damp South Georgia climate.

    Transplanting

    • Lavender can be transplanted in early spring or in fall after summer heat subsides. Cut them back by about half and keep well watered until established.
