Herbs, Spices & Medicinal Plants

If you're thinking of growing an herb garden, or already have one in your home or garden, you probably know that there are a number of herbs and spices that are used to season sweet and savory foods. The plants you grow in your garden can also serve medicinal purposes, so you can use them as home remedies to treat certain ailments.
  1. Size

    • If you've got limited space in your home, it's best to grow a small container herb garden, filled with plants you can use to season your food, such as oregano or parsley. You can also designate a small plot in your front or backyard to grow medicinal herbs, since many of these types of plants will grow well in confined areas.

    Types

    • There are several types of herbs that you can grow in your garden for savory cooking, such as parsley, oregano and thyme. Herbs like peppermint can be used in a number of dessert dishes, and the leaves can be steeped for a tea that helps to relieve upset stomach. Other medicinal herbs that can be grown indoors or out include aloe vera--the gel from the leaves can be applied directly to the skin to soothe wounds and sunburn.

    Considerations

    • A garden with an extensive selection of herbs will help you to save on your grocery bill and is convenient if you want to use alternative medicine methods as much as possible.
