How to Start Lavender From Cuttings

Lavender, known for its fresh, clean scent and delicate beauty, is a favorite herb garden staple. If you love lavender, you don't have to wait for new plants to grow from seed. Take a shortcut and start lavender from cuttings instead. It is an inexpensive and easy way to expand your herb garden.

Things You'll Need

  • Healthy lavender plant
  • Knife or sharp scissors
  • Rooting hormone
  • Flowerpot or paper cup
  • Potting soil
  • Water

      Locate the plant's freshest shoots. Look for the brightest green, and slightly shiny, shoots at the outer edges of the plant.

      Cut a fresh shoot from the plant using the knife. The shoot should be 3 to 5 inches long with no visible defects.

      Dip the cut portion of the shoot in rooting hormone if desired.

      Add 2 inches of potting soil to the pot. Hold the shoot on top of the soil with the cut end down and add potting soil all around it. When you are done, the shoot should be buried about 1 inch under the soil.

      Press the soil gently with your fingers to secure it. Water every few days until you see new growth. Once your cuttings begin to grow, you can transplant them to larger pots or to the garden.
