Planters for Herbs

If you love herbs, then consider making your own miniature herb garden. You can do this by planting your herbs in a variety of containers, such as pots, galvanized buckets and even tea cups. Be creative and begin to think about the containers around your house as potential planters for a variety of herbs. You can plant several varieties of herbs together, but try to keep flavor in mind. For example, you do not want to plant chives and lavender together because of the contrasting flavors they have.
  1. Terra Cotta Pots

    • Purchase a variety of terra cotta pots in different sizes. You may want to paint these pots by spraying them with a variety of colors to match your kitchen or bedroom. Fill the pots with soil and plant the herbs. Place them on your window sill and water a little every day or two (make sure the soil stays moist). They should sprout in a few weeks if they have adequate sunlight.

    Galvanized Metal Bucket

    • Purchase a galvanized metal bucket and use it as an herb planter. Fill the bucket with soil, and plant a wide variety of herbs in the bucket. Because the bucket is large and wide, you have a lot of space to work with. You can place your herb bucket outside on your deck or patio. Plant herbs that you will use frequently in your dishes such as chives, oregano, rosemary, basil, thyme and even a little lemongrass.

    Tea Cup Planters

    • Get some use out of unused tea cups in your kitchen. Fill them with soil, and plant a different herb in each cup. Place them on saucers, and line them on your kitchen or dining room window sills. To allow for better drainage, you can plant the herbs in small Terra cotta pots with holes in the bottom, and then place the pots in over-size tea or coffee cups. This provides an easier way to drain excess water to ensure your herbs do not become over-saturated.
