The Best Place to Grow Lavender

Lavender is a perennial herb favored for its strong, sweet fragrance and its spikes of purple flowers. Many gardeners try to grow lavender, only to fail, merely because they didn't give the plant its preferred environment. Choosing the right location is key to successful lavender culture.
  1. Sun

    • Lavender is best grown in a sunny location. The more sun, the better. In climates with cold winters, a sheltered, sunny location--perhaps next to a sunny wall--will ensure adequate warmth and light.

    Soil

    • Native to the rocky soils of the Mediterranean, a well-drained site is essential for success with lavender. You can enhance drainage with the addition of gravel, sand and organic matter, dug deeply into the planting site.

    Containers

    • Container gardening provides an opportunity to create the ideal environment for lavender. A well-draining potting medium, and a carefully chosen, sunny site can guarantee success in gardens with too much shade or poor drainage.
