How to Fertilize Allium

Allium is an ornamental flower in the onion family. This plant grows best in rich soil with little fertilizing for the most part. Under some circumstances, such as heavy harvesting of flowers or allium grown in pots, a light application of fertilizer is necessary for optimum growth and harvest.

Things You'll Need

  • Compost
  • 5-10-5 fertilizer
  • Liquid plant food

Instructions

    • 1

Plant your allium in soil that has been enriched with compost or other organic material. Dig the compost 4 to 6 inches into the soil, or mix into planting medium for container plants.

    • 2

Apply 5 tbsp. of 10-10-10 fertilizer plus 2 cups of bone meal to a 10-square-foot area where you will plant your bulbs. Work the fertilizer into the soil in the fall prior to planting these spring-blooming bulbs.

    • 3

Apply 1 tsp.10-10-10 fertilizer around the base of each plant when they start to shoot. Do not fertilize allium once it starts to flower as this encourages bulb rot.
