How to Grow Ivy on a Deck

Landscaping is most often utilized to improve the appearance of a house, patio, deck or structure. Ivy represents a common household landscaping plant. Growing strong and hardy ivy requires minimal pruning, feeding and maintenance. There are numerous types of ivy, ranging from ground cover to structural climbing. This versatility makes ivy a great choice for landscaping and decoration of exterior structures such as decks and porches.

  • Gardening gloves
  • Shovel
  • Chosen ivy plant
  • Lime
  • Water
  • Stakes or mini trellis
  • Gardening wire

      Purchase the appropriate strain of ivy to be used for creeping and clinging.

      Locate a section of the landscaping that will provide the correct amount of sunlight and water.

      Using the shovel, dig a hole for planting the ivy.

      Put on the gardening gloves and sprinkle lime in the hole prior to planting the ivy.

      Place the ivy plant in the hole, apply water and cover with dirt.

      Gently guide growing ivy along the trellis and onto the deck.
