How to Grow Red Root Spinach

Red root spinach is the common name for the leaves of red root amaranth or red root pigweed. The leaves, widely used in Asian and African cuisine have high nutritive value. The leaves have high amounts of vitamin A, C, K and B6 and iron and are a rich source of dietary minerals like calcium and magnesium. The plant grows quickly and easily and yields an abundance of leaves and seeds that provide food security in many underdeveloped countries.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a sunny part of the garden to grow amaranth. Try to find a spot at the back of the garden because amaranth attracts pests. Keep in mind that red root spinach plants grow very tall.

    • 2

Prepare a large seed bed. Water the seed bed well.

    • 3

Sow the seeds 12 inches apart on the bed. Place stakes near the seeds to serve as supports when the plant grows tall. Water the seed bed once in two days.

    • 4

Mix neem oil, castile soap and water and fill the mixture in a sprayer. When leaves appear on the plant, spray the mixture to prevent bugs from eating the leaves.
