How to Keep Raw Garlic Longer

Garlic is commonly used in food to add a distinct flavor and because it offers many health benefits. High in antioxidants, garlic has been shown to reduce the chance of cancer, heart disease and even the common cold. Garlic bulbs should be bright white and dry -- dullness or sliminess are signs of garlic going bad. With proper storage, garlic is good for up to nine months. Store peeled or chopped garlic refrigerated in an airtight container.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush any dirt or debris off the garlic using a stiff-bristled brush.

    • 2

Place garlic bulbs in a netted bag. These are available at most organic food stores and some regular grocery stores.

    • 3

Store the bagged garlic at room temperature in a dry, dark area such as a pantry.

    • 4

Examine the garlic every few days and discard any soft or sprouted cloves, as these can cause the other cloves to become bitter.
