How to Trim Hydroponic Roots

Hydroponic plants are grown in a controlled environment where the roots are submerged in a liquid, nutrient-dense solution to feed the plants. Artificial light controls ultraviolet absorptions. Because most hydroponic environments are small in nature and don't have an extended area for root growth, overgrown roots can become too thick, stunting growth. Thick root growth can also clog filtration systems. Cutting the roots can lead to root rot, but you can still control the root growth in other ways.

Instructions

    • 1

Transfer your plant to a temporary holding bucket.

    • 2

Wash the hydroponic bucket out. Clean out any residual leaves, roots or dirt. Let the bucket dry completely.

    • 3

Paint the inside of the pot with a paint containing copper hydroxide. Copper hydroxide prevents the roots from attaching to the sides of the pot and wrapping around it, girdling themselves. Garden and hydroponics stores carry paint for plants for edible consumption.

    • 4

Trim the plant itself. Larger plants require larger root systems. Prune dead leaves, stunted branches and suckers that will require water and nutrients.
