How to Grow Mullein

Mullein has been used since ancient times for protection and healing. The ancient Europeans believed mullein could protect them from attacks of wild animals if stuffed in the shoe. Such folklore may come from the plants unusual soft leaves. Today, mullein is often used as a deer deterrent and for decoration.

  1. Grow Mullein From Seeds

      Purchase seeds or collect them from plants of friends. If you're going to collect the mullein seeds, do it as soon as they appear. You will be fighting finches for the rights to the seeds. They love them.

      Begin mullein indoors in the early spring. If you plant them outdoors directly onto the soil, chances are they will be consumed prior to germination.

      Sow the seeds by scattering on the top of rich potting soil and pressing into the growing medium. It takes about two weeks for the seed to germinate.

      Divide the seedlings and transplant them to a larger pot when they have their second leaves.

      Put the plants out in your garden in the early summer. They should produce flowers the following year.

    Grow Mullein from Root Cuttings

      Take root cuttings from mature plants in the late fall as the plant enters the dormant season.

      Make a straight cut across the root when cutting the end that's near the crown of the parent plant. Remove the root from the ground.

      Cut the root into sections that are 1 to 2 inches long.

      Lay these cuttings onto the growing medium in a horizontal position and mound 1/2 inch of the medium over the root cuttings.

      Protect the cuttings by putting a plastic bag over them and keeping them in a shady area outside.

      Wait for new shoots to appear and remove the cover. Transplant to the new location.
