How to Make an Herb Window Box

There's nothing better for cooking than fresh herbs. Having these savory and spicy plants within arm's reach makes them easy to use and guarantees freshness. The best way to keep fresh herbs close by is to grow them in a kitchen window box. With a tiny herb garden right outside your window, great taste is never far away.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose easy growing herbs that have shallow root systems. Basil, parsley, chives, sage and oregano are all good choices.

    • 2

Pick herbs you use most often in your cooking. If you buy it dry at the grocery store regularly, consider growing it fresh in your herb garden.

    • 3

Measure the area below your kitchen window. Include length, width and depth measurements to ensure a proper fit.

    • 4

Purchase a window box with brackets at your local home and garden store or build one from a simple window box design.

    • 5

Provide adequate drainage in your window box by drilling three or four ½ inch holes in the bottom. Cover the holes with shards of old clay pots to prevent soil from draining out along with excess water.

    • 6

Buy herb plants that have been started at a home and garden store. Turn pots over, keeping as much of the original soil in tact when removing from pots to transfer to the herb box. Fill the box to the top with more soil after adding new plants and water in well.

Place the box on the brackets below the window and begin enjoying your flesh herbs.
