How to Keep Deer Out of Your Yard Using Natural Methods

Watching deer run through the woods or play in a field can be a captivating experience; however, having those same deer frolic in your yard and feast on your lawn plants is not quite as enchanting. Deer love to feed on many plants commonly found in flower gardens and yards such as hostas, sunflowers, roses and hibiscus. While one good way to deter deer is not to plant vegetation they enjoy, it is not a feasible solution. There are other ways, besides giving up your favorite plants, of deterring deer naturally without causing harm to the animals.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a barrier around your yard and garden using fencing. Construct wooden or aluminum fencing units to keep out the deer. Make sure the fence is between eight and 12 feet high as deer may be able to jump over lower fences.

    • 2

Erect an electric fence around vegetables. Electric fences are not generally feasible around a house lawn, but can stop deer from trampling or eating plants in vegetable gardens.

    • 3

Plant a barricade of shrubs around your home and yard. If you don't want aluminum or wooden fencing, there are varieties of shrubs that deer will usually stay away from, including boxwood, elderberry and barberry.

    • 4

Plant deer repellent flora. Besides shrubs, there are many plants that deer will not eat. Many of these plants, such as marigolds, provide a brilliant burst of color for the yard while still deterring deer. Some other deer repellant plants include holly shrubs, snapdragon, thyme, ageratum, foxglove, butterfly bushes and many varieties of creeping ground-covers.
