How to Cultivate Chickweed

Chickweed plants are considered by many gardeners to be a major nuisance. Due to their prolific growth, they are commonly considered weeds that need to be eradicated. Chickweed, however, is an herb with many beneficial properties. Chickweed is sold in pill form as an herbal supplement. It can also be consumed as a tea or used as an ointment, and is said to increase metabolism and clear up problems like psoriasis and eczema. It's worth taking the time to plant and cultivate it instead of killing it.

Instructions

  1. Planting

    • 1

Chickweed can withstand temperatures as low as 36 degrees, but it needs sunlight and fairly dry soil (after germination). Pick an area in your garden that gets plenty of sun. It is OK if there is light shade; the plant can tolerate it.

    • 2

Chickweed needs rich soil. Till the land and add high nitrogen fertilizer before you plant.

    • 3

Plant seeds 12 to 24 inches apart. Cover with 1/8 inch of seed-starting soil.

    • 4

Allow seeds two to three weeks to germinate. Water so the soil stays moist.

    Maintain

    • 5

They only need to be watered in case of a drought in high summer heat.

    • 6

Remove dead flowers and prune plant. Chickweed will bloom in the spring of the second year after planting--and every following year.

    • 7

If you want more, you can propagate by using cuttings and planting them in the spring.
