How Often Should You Water Rosemary Plants?

Rosemary plants are hardy shrubs that can be grown from seed or cuttings. Rosemary is frequently used in cooking—you can harvest rosemary needles and crush or grind them to add to almost any dish for a rich, piquant flavor. Rosemary needs six to eight hours of sunlight a day, should be be kept above 30 degrees F, and requires regular watering and trimming.
  1. Water only when dry

    • According to Gardening Know How, you should water your rosemary only when the soil in which it is planted is dry. Thoroughly soak the soil, but allow it to dry out completely before you water it again. This can take anywhere from three to seven days depending on the humidity in your house or garden.

    Water the plant directly

    • Water your rosemary by pouring water directly onto the soil. Don’t water the spill tray under the pot—rosemary will not suck the water up the way some other herbs do. Because rosemary likes mostly dry soil, you should plant your rosemary in a terra cotta pot or other pot that allows water to flow out of it freely.

Protect rosemary from too much wet

    • If you live in a wet climate, never plant your rosemary in a permanent location. If you want it to be outside during part of the day, put it in a pot that can be easily brought inside when it rains or is humid outside.
