How to Water an Herb Garden

An herb garden is a useful and rewarding hobby for home cooks and gardening enthusiasts. Being able to add your own freshly chopped herbs to a recipe heightens the enjoyment and satisfactions that comes from creating a tasty dish. Having a home herb garden also saves you money on purchasing fresh or dried herbs from the store. To help a personal herb garden flourish, it is important to keep it well watered and maintained.

Instructions

Saturate the soil of your herb garden completely each time you water. Do not simply splash a few drops on the leaves; use a watering can, mister or spray bottle to evenly dampen the soil each time you water. This will ensure the roots will receive the moisture they need to grow.

    • 2

Water your herb garden early in the morning before the hottest part of the day. This will ensure that your plants have the necessary moisture to get them through when the sun is at its highest point, especially if your herb garden is planted in direct sunlight.

    • 3

Get in the habit of tending to your herb garden on a daily basis. Even if your herbs look well hydrated, a daily routine of tending to their needs will make sure you don't forget to water, prune and transfer as needed.

    • 4

Research the needs of your individual herbs to ensure a healthy garden. Cater the amount of water you give to the type of herb you are growing. Some herbs require more water than others, so it is not a good idea to treat each one the same. For example, sage and rosemary need to be watered less often than parsley or basil.

Plant your herbs in pots that provide great drainage. Equally as important as good watering habits is good drainage. If you give the pot too much water and not enough drainage, the roots will rot and your herbs will die. If you have an indoor garden and are worried about where to store excess water, place your pots in a tray that will collect water, and empty it as necessary.
