Vantage has been approved to use on centipede, hard fescue, creeping red fescue and chewing fescue lawns. Carpet grass and other turf types are damaged by the chemicals in Vantage. This herbicide contains sethoxydim as its active ingredient, which causes grass blade browning and dead patches when used on carpet grass. While Vantage should not be used on carpet grass lawns, gardeners may use the postemergent herbicide when renovating their lawns or before they reseed.
Gardeners may use Vantage to kill perennial weeds in carpet grass lawns. Perennial weeds are difficult to control, because few selective herbicides on the market target grassy weeds without harming the surrounding grass. Therefore, gardeners control these weeds and reseed their bare areas. Vantage remains in the soil five days after it has been applied. Wait at least five days for your perennial weeds to die off before reseeding the areas with carpet grass seed.
Spray Vantage on weeds when you renovate or overseed your carpet grass. Avoid mowing your lawn seven days before and after using the herbicide. Choose a time to spray when you have a 24-hour window of dry weather to allow the chemicals to absorb into the foliage. Thoroughly apply the product on weed foliage. However, do not excessively spray Vantage to cause runoff. Wait seven days to reapply Vantage to your weeds. Dig up the weeds and renovate the lawn or reseed with carpet grass.
Carpet grass is sensitive to most herbicides. In fact, it is difficult for gardeners to find an herbicide that is approved for carpet grass. When in doubt, dig up weeds in your carpet grass yard and overseed bare areas. Use an herbicide containing 2,4-D + MCPP, which has been approved for carpet grass to control broadleaf weeds. Prevent weed seeds from germinating by using a pre-emergent herbicide that contains atrazine on your carpet grass.
