How to Lay Turf Cricket Pitch on Soil for Grass

While cricket is a game more common in Europe and parts of Latin America, small organizations in the United States are working to bring the game into the mainstream. Cricket is played on a field in traditional whites (clothing) with a bat and ball and often called lawn bowling. The rules are governed by an international Law of Cricket, which prescribes specific characteristics for the field. Cricket pitches are the grass-covered areas in the center of the field between the wickets. In amateur cricket the pitch may have an artificial covering over a slab of concrete. Professional leagues always play on perfectly manicured, closely shorn live turf.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the tape measure to find the dimensions of the pitch. It is 22 yards long and 10 feet wide. Mark the edges of the measurements with stakes.

    • 2

Pour the clay, sand, calcium carbonate, sodium and compost into the center of the marked field. Mix well with a shovel. Use a rake to spread it to the edges of the markers, with slightly more at the ends where wear occurs the most.

    • 3

Water the clay and sand mixture until it's lightly damp. Use the turf roller to flatten out the new medium. Check your work with a level and rake extra material into thin areas. Roll the medium or "bulli" until it is hard and compact.

    • 4

Pull a spiked roller across the surface of the pitch in both directions to make holes for the seed. Load a seeder and set it in the highest broadcast. Walk in even strips across the pitch to overseed the area. Lightly run a push broom over the area to knock the seed into the holes.

    • 5

Set up a sprinkler and water for 15 minutes. Water daily in summer or every other day in spring. Fall and winter plantings are not ideal.

    • 6

Fertilize the turf when it's 1 to 2 inches high. Apply 1/2 oz. of ammonium sulfate per 3 square feet of pitch. Mow the grass to a height of one-half inch. After establishment, water slowly and infrequently and allow the pitch to dry slightly between periods of irrigation.
