How to Plant WW B-Dahl

WW B-Dahl is a hardy foraging hay that is easy to plant and grow. It is a blue-stemmed perennial that grows in tufts of grass, ideal for cattle and horses to eat. A single plant can mature to take over a whole square yard of space. It has a long, leafy vegetative stage and is long-lived. For those seeking to establish the grass, it is easily grown from seed as long as sufficient contact with the seedbed is made. The grass can tolerate drought and some amount of cold and salt, making it an easy-to-manage foraging crop. Livestock often prefer this nice-smelling hay above others.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove weeds from the seedbed by hand or with application of herbicide. Follow directions on herbicide packaging, making sure that the residual effect of the chemicals will not overlap with seed planting. Complete removal of weeds is necessary to allow the grass to establish.

    • 2

Prepare the seedbed by breaking up the soil to a granular consistency, using a tiller or spade. Loamy and clay soil is ideal, but sandy soil is best avoided. This grass will also grow in marginal rocky soil.

    • 3

Remove all plant debris and rocks from the surface of the seedbed that could inhibit seeding emergence.

    • 4

Distribute 1 to 2 pounds of seed per acre using a seed broadcaster. Ideal planting time is April to May.

    • 5

Pack the seedbed down with a cultipacker, heavy vehicle or other tools that can flatten and firm the seedbed while working in the seeds. Seeds should be about one-eighth inch deep, but no deeper than a quarter inch, and should be firm within the bed with good soil contact.
