Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your front porch and write down the measurements. If your porch has awkward or asymmetrical corners and edges, mark separate measurements for these areas. This allows you to adequately select and arrange pots for gardening. If necessary, draw out a quick sketch of your porch to help you keep a visual while selecting items later.

    • 2

Select an assortment of pots that suit your porch's size and theme. If you have an overhanging roof or awning, select hanging pots to make the most of your space. Pots come in a wide array of shapes, sizes and textures, so you can choose them according to any of your specifications.

    • 3

Arrange the pots you've selected around your front porch according to their sizes and corresponding porch measurements. If you purchased any hanging pots or planters, install them with self-tapping hooks. This step gives you time to practice with different arrangements of your pots.

    • 4

Line each pot or container with about 4 inches of small river stones. The stones serve as drainage so the water doesn't quickly accumulate and settle in the pots.

    • 5

Fill each container three-quarters full with a blend of 1 part peat moss to 3 parts potting soil blend, using a blend that accentuates the growth of your plants. For example, if you're growing vegetables, select a soil blend that is best for container-grown vegetables. Look for different soil varieties online or in nurseries and garden supply stores.

    • 6

Select and plant the seeds of plants that are best suited for your containers and the positions they are facing. Place sun-loving flowers in containers positioned in sunny spots on the porch, and place shade-thriving plants in shady areas of the porch. Follow the instructions on each seed-type's packet to make sure you complete sowing properly.

Carefully transplant established seedlings, if you're using them, into the soil of your pots, spacing them apart according to recommendations for each particular plant variety. Make sure to cover the roots at all times while transplanting so as not to put the plants into shock.
