How to Cut Grass Hay

Hay is a useful material for a number of situations. It can be spread on flower beds to help plants grow and protect them from pests. It is also useful for animals both as a food source and bedding. The basic idea is dried-out grass, but there is more to it than that. The cutting of the grass is the first hurdle and the method used depends on the purpose of the hay.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the grass using a lawn mower. This cuts the grass quite short and keeps it all together. This length of grass is useful for small animal bedding and food.

    • 2

Chop longer grass using a weed whacker. These string trimmers cut longer grass at a greater length. Collect the grass using a garden rake or a leaf vacuum. Longer hay can be used as compost, mulch and bedding for larger animals.

    • 3

Slice the grass using manual lawn trimming implements. Garden shears and other scissor-based tools are useful as the length of the grass can be regulated, but are much harder work.
