The Best Soil Mix for Turf Grass

Turf grass grows in nearly any soil, but planting in the best soil creates a healthier turf grass. The soil is critical for the establishment of turf grass. A good mixture full of nutrients prevents plant disease and excessive maintenance.

    • The best soil mixture for turf grass is sandy loam. This type of soil is nearly one-half sand, one-third silt and one-sixth clay. This content ratio creates a texture that is loose and does not compact when wet. It also allows plenty of oxygen to circulate around the turf grass roots.

    Considerations

    • The optimum pH range is between 6.0 and 7.5. When the soil pH is below 6.0, then the soil is too acidic to grow turf grass without amendments. Alkaline soil, pH above 7.5, makes it difficult for the roots of turf grass to take up nutrients.

    Significance

    • Test the soil before making any amendments. The results help determine the soil profile, which gives information about the needs of the soil. Once you till the soil, add phosphorus and potassium according to the results of the soil test. If nitrogen is needed, then add it after you mow the turf grass the first time.
