Identification of Tall Fescue

Tall fescue is a type of cool-season grass that grows in clumps. Tall fescue is often grown as lawn grass or in pastures. You can identify tall fescue by its root structure, growth habit, leaves, stems and other characteristics.
  1. Growth Habit

    • Tall fescue has an upright growth habit, bearing erect, ascending leaves. As a perennial grass, tall fescue reproduces by seed and by short underground rhizomes. Tall fescue clumps can grow up to 6 1/2 feet tall.

    Stems

    • The stems of tall fescue grow upright and bear prominent joints or "nodes." In cross section, the stems are round. Atop the stems, mature tall fescue that isn't mowed produces panicle seed heads and purple-tinged flower spikelets during late spring and early summer.

    Leaves

    • Tall fescue has rolled leaves that become flattened, with blades that are less than 2/5-inch wide and range in length from 4 to 28 inches. The leaves emerge from a central clump and are dark green. The leaves don't have midribs but do have rough margins. The upper leaf surfaces are coarse and ridged, while the undersides are smooth and slightly glossy.
