The Germination of Tall Fescue

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is a cool-season grass that keeps its dark green color during the spring, fall and mild winters. Tall fescue grass is a popular choice for home lawns because it is grown from seeds. It grows in sunny and partially sunny areas during the cool weather.
  1. Time Frame

    • Tall fescue is planted during September or October. Do not plant this grass in the spring since the summer temperatures will stress the seeds and sprouts. Broadcast the tall fescue seeds and rake them into the top 1/4 inch of soil; the seeds must have direct contact with the soil to germinate.

    Protection

    • Straw mulch is used to preserve soil moisture, which improves seed germination rates. A 2-inch layer will prevent erosion of the area, seed movement and predation from birds. Do not remove the mulch after the tall fescue seeds germinate since the straw will break down and provide the tall fescue with nutrients.

    Conditions

    • Tall fescue seeds germinate in five to 10 days in good conditions. Eight hours of daytime temperatures around 86 degrees Fahrenheit and 12 hours of night temperatures of 68 degrees are ideal for germination. Keep the upper 1/2 inch of soil moist with daily watering.
