Fescue Problems

Fescue is a common cool-season grass used for lawns and agricultural forage throughout much of the United States. Although fescue is typically a low-maintenance grass, problems can develop from disease, infestation or human mismanagement.
  1. Brown Patch

    • Brown patch, a disease caused by a fungus, is s danger to fescue grass. A lawn treated with too much nitrogen fertilizer is more susceptible to the fungus. Avoid letting your fescue grass receive more than 1 to 2 inches of water per week.

    Planting Management

    • The best time to plant fescue grass is autumn. Planting in spring leaves the grass more susceptible to the heat and drought stresses of summer. Grass planted in the spring is less likely to resist disease.

    Insect Pests

    • White grubs, the larvae of scarab beetles, are a common problem for fescue lawns. Treat your lawn with an appropriate pesticide if you find more than three grubs per square foot of turf.
